Soupy's secretary would give us Soupy's fan mail and we would send out this letter along with our "We Stuff Envelopes Cheap" sales pitch. I don't remember the secretary's name, but, as you can see on the bottom of this letter, her initials were pm.

This was the flyer we sent out, along with the cover letter from Soupy, to fans who wrote to Soupy at KABC.

Original hand-painted version of Soupy Sales Fan Club badge. Designed by Ellen Bank and hand painted with enamel on cardboard. These took forevere to paint, and we later switched to a photo of Soupy on a badge -- also hand made but faster to produce!

We took this photo backstage. Soupy is holding chalk, ready to write his Words of Wisdom. He always waited until the last minute to put add them to the blackboard. Clyde Alder in his Black tooth White Fang outfit can be seen camera left.

The studio was often a pie-covered mess at the close of an episode. Most of the pies where expertly thrown by stagehand Bobby.

Page 1 of First issue of the Fan Club Newsletter. It was mimeographed at a local printer on La Cienega near Hi-Point Avenue. The lead story was about the taping of Soupy's ABC prime time version of the show. Taping was moved from the small studio to ABC's new studio.

Just as we were ready to send out the newsletter, we got word that the Hippy puppet was stolen. It was returned a few weeks later.
Clyde Adler Whi...
Clyde played the off camera characters in Detroit and Los Angeles. Here Clyde is wearing his Black Tooth White Fang outfit. He added the puppet hands as needed. Clyde also played Hippy and Pookie and most of the characters Soupy met at the door.

Needless to say many parents and educators were dubious about their kids watching Soupy. So now and then Soupy would roll out a campaign like this one: "Safety Sure".
